Using techniques from image sciences and art theory, we research methods for transferring natural images, such as photos, to digital oil paintings.  This is accomplished by studying the statistical features of oil paintings of various styles, including realistic, special (e.g. Van Gogh' s) , and abstract paintings. Our studies model the color, illumination and oil brush effects used, as well as specific painting methods required for special objects. We developed a digital oil painting system by simulating the painting process of painters.  Based on 2.1D sketch, we outline the boundaries and key strokes in an object image then paint it out in a multi-layer process.  Finally, we make an approximation of the height field to realize the illumination effects.
